Grow with neighbors

The eighth annual Growing the Neighborhood Volunteer Day is scheduled Saturday at FDR Park. The Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department, and Friends of FDR Park will host the volunteer day from 8 a.m. to noon. Dozens of community members and corporate volunteers will gather to clean up the park. Workers are asked to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Children will be able to take a tour of a fire truck, fish in FDR Lake, play at a new playground, and learn about the environment. A ribbon cutting for the playground is scheduled at 11 a.m., with Mayor Nutter and Michael DiBerardinis, deputy mayor for environmental and community services. The event, rain or shine, will be at 1500 Pattison Ave. Enter from Pattison Avenue and follow the balloons.

The events run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants also can paddle off Penn's Landing in a kayak or swan boat for $8 to $10. Saturday

Alzheimer's walk

Thousands of supporters, including Alzheimer's Association "champions" wearing purple, are expected Saturday at Citizens Bank Park to "Walk to End Alzheimer's." The event will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m.; the walk will start at 11 a.m. Registered walkers who raise at least $100 will receive a T-shirt. Champions, who include people living with the disease, families, caregivers, advocates, and corporate and community leaders, have formed walk teams to join the fight against what is now the nation's sixth-leading cause of death, organizers say. The 5K walk raises awareness and funds so the association can continue to support research efforts and provide programs and services to the nearly 300,000 families in this region affected by the disease. The Delaware Valley chapter will hold walks on these dates: Oct. 1 at Kutztown University; Oct. 15 at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach, Del.; Oct. 22 at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington; and Oct. 23 at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City.
