Jon Regen

He's a pianist who gained his chops in jazz, but Jon Regen has developed into even more. On his suave and soulful new album, Revolution, you can still hear some of the jazz background, but mostly what you hear is someone who has developed into a supremely accomplished pop artist. Think Harry Connick Jr., or maybe Billy Joel without the bombast - except the New York-based Regen carves out his own niche as both a writer and singer. He moves effortlessly from the rock-edged "Fighting for Your Love" to the insistently catchy "She's Not You (But Tonight She'll Have to Do"), and on to quiet, late-night laments like "One Part Broken, Two Parts Blue" that never sound maudlin. In these parts, Regen may not be as well-known as some of his accompanists - Andy Summers, Benmont Tench - but this album shows he deserves to be.

Glen Campbell

Sadly, this is Glen Campbell's valediction. In June, Campbell, 75, revealed that he is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and now he has embarked on a Goodbye Tour in support of a final album. Ghosts on the Canvas includes autobiographical originals, plus songs written by admirers such as Paul Westerberg, Teddy Thompson, and Robert Pollard. It's self-consciously nostalgic, lush with strings and allusions to Campbell's classic hits, from "Galveston" to "Gentle on My Mind" to "Rhinestone Cowboy," and it's given gravitas with many intimations of mortality. "Each breath I take is a gift that I will never take for granted," he sings, amid musical references to "Wichita Lineman," in "Thousand Lifetimes." Campbell's lifetime includes his late '60s variety TV show, as well as session work on the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and on hits for Frank Sinatra, the Monkees, and Merle Haggard. The legend comes to Penn's Irvine Auditorium on Thursday.
