And boldly, too.
Philadelphia was at the center of its own fashion stage Thursday despite the fact that more than 100 miles away, New York Fashion Week was getting under way. There, spring 2012 is the focus for more than 75 runway shows by high-end favorites such as BCBG Max Azria, Vera Wang, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B, and J. Crew, which will preview their coming collections.
But it is almost fall, and for that reason the Philadelphia Collection, with its emphasis on what's currently in the stores, fits with the needs of shoppers and retailers rather than designers.
The Philadelphia Collection is a collaboration among the Office of the City Representative, Center City District, and the Philadelphia Marketing Alliance.
"Philadelphia is a great place to shop," said Melanie Johnson, the city representative in charge of special events. "Our event helps keep that image up."
In addition to the bevy of discount shopping opportunities, runway shows, and happy hours at favorite shopping haunts such as Joan Shepp, Pileggi Boutique, and Bus Stop, the collection will feature panel discussions geared to both fashion insiders and those trying to break into the business.
Highlights include a premiere of The Tents, a documentary on New York Fashion Week, hosted by image consultant Cheryl Ann Wadlington; the 18th annual Phasion Phest, a fashion and beauty event hosted by event planner Sharon Phillips Waxman; and a runway couture show Sept. 24 hosted by FBH-The Agency as part of its Philly Fashion Week.
In addition, Manayunk-based Paula Hian took a break from working on her spring 2012 collection in Paris to show her fall clothing line at her studio.
"I didn't get a chance to take part in it last year," Hian said. "I'm excited about bringing a high-end, upscale feel to Philly. We love fashion here. This is our home."
