One of history's greatest Jewish heroes is to be honored in film by . . . Mel Gibson. Hello?? The Braveheart auteur, who made waves with a drunken anti-Semitic rant in '06, plans to star in and/or direct a Joe Eszterhas-scripted film about Judah Maccabee, the Jewish warrior who led an uprising against the Seleucid Empire in Judea between 167 and 160 B.C. (He inspired the celebration of Hanukkah.)

Jewish leaders are angry. Simon Wiesenthal Center founder Rabbi Marvin Hier says casting Mel in the part "is like casting . . . a white supremacist as trying to portray Martin Luther King Jr. It's simply an insult to Jews."

'Footloose' at Children's Hospital

Kenny Wormald, 27, on Thursday showed kids at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia how to pull off a few fancy dance moves. Kenny and his Footloose costar, Julianne Hough, 23, visited the hospital's new media center, Voice. Their film opens Oct. 14.

Speaking of love . . .

In Touch Weekly claims that once-divorced Sir Paul McCartney and his galpal Nancy Shevell are about to wed. . . . Tony Bennett, whose duet with the late Amy Winehouse, "Body and Soul," is featured on his new CD, tells AARP.org he wanted to help Amy get clean and sober before it was too late. "I wanted to talk to her and her dad about what happened to me," says Tony, who dabbled with drugs as a youth, "and how I stopped and how it helped. . . . it was so tragic that she died so young. I was trying to tell her, 'Stop, stop. Don't go that way.' "
