Bishop Eustace's Holly Bischof aiming for Meet of Champions

September 11, 2011|By Phil Anastasia, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Holly Bischof didn't start running cross-country until her sophomore year at Bishop Eustace.

Now, she might be the best distance runner in the state.

Bischof finished second in the Meet of Champions last November as a junior with a time of 18 minutes, 9 seconds. She also won the South Jersey sectional at Delsea in 18:05 and finished second in the Non-Public A state meet in 18:22.

In track last spring, Bischof won the Non-Public A state title in the 3,200 meters in 10:43.8 and finished second in that event in the Meet of Champions in 10:33.2.

Story continues below.

Bischof, who lives in Hainesport, is the leader of a strong Bishop Eustace team that should win its third consecutive Olympic National division title and challenge for the South Jersey and state Non-Public A titles.

Question: Are you a cross-country runner who also does track or a track runner who also runs cross-country?

Answer: I'm definitely a cross-country girl who also runs track. I like the longer distances and the scenery in cross-country as opposed to just running around in circles.

Q: Where's your favorite place to run?

A: Holmdel. I love the bowl. A lot of people get intimidated by it, but I love it. I see it as a challenge. It makes me run faster to have that challenge and try to overcome it.

Q: Where's your favorite place to run in South Jersey for training?

A: I like the hills in Haddonfield. It's a great place to train.

Q: How long have you been running.

A: I've always liked running, but I really didn't get involved in the sport until I went out for track in the spring of my freshman year. I was always a soccer person. But once I got involved in cross-country, I loved it. I miss soccer, but I love cross-country so much.

Q: What do you love about distance running?

A: It's great after a tough day in school to just get out there and clear your mind. It relaxes you.

Q: What's your favorite subject in school?

A: Probably math or science. I took a psychology course last year that I just loved. I have an AP bio class this year that I think is going to be a lot of fun.

Q: Have you decided on college?

A: Not yet. I've narrowed it down to Duke, Cornell, Penn, and Princeton. I'm going to take visits this fall.

Q: Do you know what you want to study?

A: Premed. I've always wanted to be a doctor. It just fascinates me. Maybe an orthopedic surgeon.

Q: Do you have any other hobbies or interests?

A: I'm into the martial arts. I'm going for my fourth-degree black belt (in tang soo do) in October.

Q: What do you like about it?

A: It's just really cool to break boards and learn forms. It's so much fun.

Q: What's your individual goal this season?

A: Senior year, Meet of Champions, I'm going for it.
