Wed. Pa. girls’ roundup: St. Hubert wins opener

Twelve days after the official start of the fall sports season, St. Hubert finally played a field hockey game Wednesday.

The Bambies, looking to improve on last year's fourth-place finish in the Catholic League, started their season with a thrilling, 1-0 win at Archbishop Ryan.

Kate McFeeters scored the first-half goal, and goalie Angela Bachman turned aside all 10 shots she faced.

Also in the Catholic League, Cardinal O'Hara opened its league schedule with a 3-1 victory over visiting Archbishop Wood. Marissa Cicione, Meghan Kearney, and Alexa Staiber contributed the goals, aided by assists from Grace Boston and Carlie Spaeder, while goalie Sam Kelly needed just two saves for the win.

Inter-Ac. Allison Carrigan snapped a 1-1 deadlock by scoring 10 minutes into the second half, and Germantown Academy pulled away from host Springside for a 4-1, Inter-Ac League triumph.

Maggie Oberkicher, Hannah Sargent, and Liz Boetefuer also scored for the Patriots.

Nonleague. Alana Dumas and Leslie MacManus scored goals with help from assists by Taryn Gallagher and Weezie Chakejian, driving Episcopal Academy past visiting Lawrenceville, 2-0. The unbeaten Churchmen (4-0) had Gianna Pileggi in goal with four saves.

Notre Dame overwhelmed visiting Friends' Central, 7-0, with a three-goal game from Emily Faught. Kirsten Mansfield chipped in with two goals, and the Irish defense allowed no shots on goal.

 

Girls' Soccer

Courtney Weidner scored a goal and assisted on two others, and Kerry Petroski netted a pair of goals as Little Flower finally opened its season by blanking host Neumann-Goretti, 5-0, in the Catholic League.

Kerri McGinley's two goals topped a list of seven St. Hubert goal scorers who contributed to an 8-0 win over visiting Hallahan. Bambies goalies Krista Patterson and Grace Lloyd shared the shutout with a save apiece.

Ches-Mont. West Chester Rustin collected its fifth win of the season, 2-0, at Bishop Shanahan. Rachel Barbella and Jessica Bednarcik came through with goals, while Andrew Gunderson and Janna Brown had assists.

Great Valley goalie Jenna Morris stopped five of six shots, and Maggie Kennedy produced two goals as the Patriots dealt host Kennett a 3-1 setback.

In a showdown of teams looking for their first win, Sun Valley handled host Oxford, 4-1. Taylor Stigale had two assists and joined teammates Claudia McLaughlin, Steph June, and Ashley Gindle with a goal apiece.
