Phil’s Picks

September 15, 2011|By Phil Anastasia, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

What was a mystery in the preseason has become clear to some folks by Week 2.

Others still aren't so sure about anything.

Here goes anyway:

Friday

Williamstown (1-0) at Lenape (0-1). Two teams that want to elbow their way into the WJFL American and South Jersey Group 4 conversation get a chance to show their credentials.

Story continues below.

Williamstown's depth and speed showed in the second half against Eastern. Sophomore Marquis Little and senior Chris Inge are playmakers, and the Braves have a weapon in kicker Mike Burke.

Lenape lost its grip in the opener against Cherokee. Can these Indians shake off disappointment? Pick: Williamstown, 24-20.

Seneca (1-0) at Moorestown (1-0). The Golden Eagles never really recovered from an upset loss to Moorestown on a September Sunday last season.

This Seneca team has lower expectations, and should play with abandon. But Moorestown quarterback Andrew Lisa has weapons galore in the Quakers' no-huddle, spread offense. Pick: Moorestown, 27-13.

Cherokee (1-0) at Eastern (0-1). The Chiefs aren't the same team that went 12-0 last season, and the Vikings aren't the same team that went 1-9.

Cherokee's ground game found its stride in the second half against Lenape behind Zaire Williams and Nick Follet. Pick: Cherokee, 21-10.

Cinnaminson (0-1) at Holy Cross (1-0). The Pirates get another chance at a top division foe after a tough loss to Willingboro. They will need to get past at least one if they are going to challenge for the Patriot title.

The Lancers beat a solid Florence team behind a sturdy offensive line and dangerous wideout Lloyd Smith. Cinnaminson's three-year starters have to seize this moment. Pick: Cinnaminson, 19-18.

Kingsway (1-0) at Triton (1-0). Two teams with a chance to go 2-0 in the Royal and set themselves up for a special season.

Kingsway is riding high after upsetting Delsea behind a swarming defense and quarterback Tyler Barnholt. Like Cinnaminson, Triton has several three-year starters who don't want to miss this opportunity. Pick: Triton, 24-20.

Absegami (1-0) at Holy Spirit (0-1). The No. 1 Spartans are 0-1 on paper only, as they forfeited a 41-16 victory over Oakcrest for use of an ineligible player, who wasn't a starter.

Absegami could be a factor in the Cape American and South Jersey Group 4 behind junior quarterback Rashad Kinlaw. Holy Spirit won't fumble four times again, as the Spartans did against Oakcrest. Pick: Holy Spirit, 31-13.
