Williamstown takes down Lenape

September 16, 2011|By Bill Iezzi, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Williamstown passed, kicked, and ran its way to victory Friday night in a West Jersey Football League American Division game at Lenape.

And in the end, the Braves must have felt pretty good about how their Wing-T offense worked over the Indians' defense for a 24-6 final.

Sophomore fullback John Chamberlain led the inside attack, scoring touchdowns on runs of 1 and 4 yards. Senior Chris Inge and sophomore Marquis Little led the outside attack, and senior Dan Collins held it all together at quarterback.

Story continues below.

"We can run," Williamstown coach Frank Fucetola said. "No. 3, Marques Little and No. 24, Chris Inge, are very good football players with very good speed. Our fullback in our Wing-T formation, too. And our quarterback can throw the ball."

Chamberlain, a 5-foot-9, 195-pounder, scored his second touchdown on a 4-yard run with 6 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Mike Burke kicked his third extra point, and Williamstown (2-0 overall, 2-0 league) had a 24-0 lead.

Chamberlain had 19 carries for 83 yards; Inge, 14 for 99; and Little, 9 for 84.

Lenape (0-2, 0-2), which had trouble running and throwing against Williamstown's defense, scored a surprise touchdown when senior wide receiver Jordan Walker flew down the left side of the field, caught a 40-yard bomb from quarterback Cory Jett, and raced to the end zone on a play that covered 70 yards.

The two-point conversion pass failed with 25.5 seconds remaining in the game.

By intermission, Williamstown had led, 17-0, and Little and Chamberlain had scored.

In the half, Little rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown, Inge bolted for 65 yards on nine carries, and Chamberlain ran for 37 yards and a TD.

Fucetola forgot to mention his senior kicker, Burke, who kicked a 35-yard field goal and both extra points with ease.

The Braves' first score came when Little carried a screen pass from Collins (4 for 7, 123 yards and a TD) 26 yards. Burke's kick made it 7-0.

About five minutes later, Burke kicked the 35-yard field goal with about 15 yards to spare, and Williamstown had a 10-0 lead. The Braves' defense had stymied Lenape's running game with Trevor Terrell and Arkemus Baskerville taking handoffs from Cory Jett.

Chamberlain capped a nine-play drive with a 1-yard dash for the Braves' second TD and a 17-0 lead with 4:53 remaining until halftime.

Lenape recovered a fumble on its own 4-yard line with 35.6 seconds left in the second period to thwart another Braves opportunity. However, the Indians let the clock run down and the score remained 17-0.

Lenape's offensive line had to make an adjustment because one of its leaders, 6-0, 225-pound senior Bob Isopi, was sidelined with a hyperextension of an elbow.

Chad Cunningham, a 5-11, 185-pound junior, stepped up.

"We're progressing, one week at a time, one game at a time," first-year Lenape coach Tim McAneney said.
