Chestnut Hill's Wilson wins Briarwood

September 17, 2011|FOR THE INQUIRER

Dustin Wilson's cross-country credentials grew on Saturday when the Chestnut Hill senior ran away from a strong field at the 21st annual Briarwood Invitational.

Wilson toured the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 39.10 seconds to win by a comfortable 25 seconds. His time is the third-fastest ever at Belmont Plateau, 20 seconds off the mark set in 2009 by Joe Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North (N.J.).

Ranked No. 19 among all cross-country runners nationally and No. 2 in the Northeast by DyeStat XC, Wilson felt snubbed when his ranking dropped slightly the week after he shattered his home course record.

Story continues below.

"He said, 'What do I have to do [to improve my ranking]?' " Chestnut Hill coach Paul Hines said. "His time [at Belmont] was expected, because last year in the state independent schools championship he ran 15:46 in October on the same course."

Wilson started fast, opening a lead of 20 to 30 yards at the one-mile mark and was never threatened.

Wilson, who is looking toward qualifying for the Foot Locker national championships this fall, will have one more shot at the course record on Oct. 29 at the state independent schools race.

Cardinal O'Hara took the boys' team title as Dan Savage (16:09) finished third and Mike Bilotta (16:16) was sixth.

In the girls' championship race, Pennsbury edged Downingtown East by a point (53-54) for the team title as Pennsbury's fifth runner, Erin O'Connell, got to the finish line in 15th place, one spot and 19 seconds ahead of East's Sarah Black.
