Knee sprain couldn't keep Temple's Paulhill down

The football high got to Shahid Paulhill.

That's why the Temple defensive tackle said he played in Saturday's game against Penn State.

"I was going back and forth the whole week, deciding if I wanted to play on this knee or not," Paulhill said after Penn State's 14-10 victory over Temple (2-1) at Lincoln Financial Field. "But this just got to me, you know."

The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder was listed as questionable for the game. The North Catholic product suffered sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of Temple's win over Akron.

Because of the injury, Levi Brown started in his place against the Nittany Lions (2-1). However, Paulhill, who wore a knee brace, rotated in and out of the game with other defensive linemen.

He finished with one tackle and was credited with blocking a 49-yard field goal attempt at the conclusion of the first half. Paulhill corrected things after the game.

"Actually, that was Levi Brown," he said. "Levi got the blocked field goal.

"It just felt good [to see Levi block it] going into halftime."

Paulhill expects to return to the starting lineup for next Saturday's game at Maryland. He said his knee was feeling much better.

"I should be 100 percent next week," said Paulhill, who didn't participate in any contact drills this past week.

Moving up career list

Temple placekicker Brandon McManus' 40-yard field goal moved him into a fourth-place tie at 33 with Nick Mike-Mayer on the Owls' all-time field-goals list. McManus is 3 for 5 on field-goal attempts this season. His longest successful kick was the 40-yarder against Akron.

Packed crowd

The 57,323 fans in attendance made up Temple's second-largest crowd at Lincoln Financial Field and third-largest home crowd in school history.

"We [also] had our largest student crowd here in the history of Temple football, 11,000," Temple coach Steve Addazio said. "We had a great environment here."
