PhillyInc: Phila. rules Chamber's awards

A little more splash and panache may be associated with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's 29th annual Small Business Excellence Awards in November.

The splash comes courtesy of Scott Mirkin, of ESM Productions, who was named the Chamber's small-business person of the year. Founded in 1996, ESM is an event and video-production firm that handled inaugural ceremonies for Gov. Ed Rendell in 2007 and Mayor Nutter in 2008 as well as Welcome America's huge free outdoor concert each July since 2008.

Story continues below.

The panache is provided by Sarah Van Aken, of S.V.A. Holdings Corp., who was chosen as young entre-

preneur of the year. She is one of Philadelphia's growing number of celebrated fashion designers and is known for applying socially responsible business practices.

But the real rock star may be Schramm Inc., the West Chester maker of the drilling rigs that played a key role in the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners in 2010. The 111-year-old Schramm was named manufacturer of the year.

Of the seven other award winners, all but one are based in Philadelphia. Here they are, along with their categories: All Event Party Rental, of Marcus Hook (customer service excellence); CoreStaff Inc. (family business); Support Center for Child Advocates (nonprofit organization); Vynamic L.L.C. (professional service); Trolley Car Diner & Trolley Car Cafe (retailer); Mondre Energy Inc. (sustainable business); and Christini Technologies Inc. (technological excellence).

Also, Wawa Inc. will receive the Chamber's Visionary Award, which began in 2007 to recognize a large enterprise that started as a small business. All winners will be recognized at a Nov. 17 ceremony at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Plosser Speech

Fresh off his latest dissenting vote at the Federal Open Market Committee meeting last week, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia president Charles I. Plosser will provide his views on the economy at a Villanova School of Business event at the university's conference center in Radnor on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
