The NHL said yesterday it doesn't know for certain if Wayne Simmonds directed a homophobic slur at the Rangers' Sean Avery in Monday's preseason game, so for now no punishment will be given to the Flyers' forward.
Colin Campbell, the league's senior executive vice president of hockey operations and former disciplinarian, said last night that because of "conflicting accounts of what transpired on the ice, we have been unable to substantiate with the necessary degree of certainty what was said and by whom." Campbell said none of the officials heard any slurs.
