Rick’s Week 5 picks

September 29, 2011|By Rick O’Brien, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Don't expect much passing Saturday night at Falcon Field.

Council Rock South runs the wishbone, with quarterback Brian Donnelly as the catalyst. Pennsbury has a wing-T scheme that features QB Shawn Pepper, fullback Daquan Mack, and halfback Adam Lewis.

The Suburban One League National Conference matchup between the Golden Hawks (4-0, 1-0) and host Falcons (3-1, 1-0) will begin at 7 p.m.

Story continues below.

Behind Donnelly's 136 rushing yards and two touchdowns, C.R. South, ranked No. 8 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, routed Harry S Truman, 35-7, last Friday.

Pennsbury has won three straight since losing to District 11's Easton, a PIAA Class AAAA state quarterfinalist last season, in its opener.

The Falcons mixed it up a bit in last Friday's 21-7 win over Bensalem. They rushed for 160 yards, on 47 attempts, and Pepper connected with split end Lee Hamacher for a 21-yard score.

Dave Sanderson is Pennsbury's offensive coordinator. He is the former head coach at Hatboro-Horsham, William Tennent, and Martin Luther King. Johnny Donohoe calls the plays for C.R. South.

For the season, the 6-foot, 185-pound Donnelly, a Division I recruit in baseball, has carried 62 times for 591 yards and nine TDs. He passed only twice against Truman.

The Falcons lead the head-to-head series, 2-1. The Golden Hawks triumphed, 24-0, last season.

Pick: Pennsbury, 20-16.

Last week: 11-2. Overall: 35-14 (.714).

Friday

Conestoga (3-1, 2-1) at Springfield, Delco (4-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. The Cougars' 4-4 defense, yielding 10 points per game, is headed by inside linebacker Tyler Morrissey. Pick: Springfield, 23-21.

Upper Darby (1-3, 1-2) at Strath Haven (2-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. For the Panthers, Andrew Crawford and James Griffin have combined for 774 rushing yards and 11 TDs. Pick: Strath Haven, 27-7.

Souderton (2-2, 1-0) at Pennridge (1-3, 0-0), 7 p.m. Against Lansdale Catholic last week at mud-covered Poppy Yoder Field, the Rams gained their first win. Pick: Souderton, 17-14.

Unionville (3-1, 0-1) at No. 3 Coatesville (4-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. Unionville's rushing attack is sparked by Richie Sampson (558 yards, 7 TDs) and Tom Pancoast (406, 1). Pick: Coatesville, 26-7.

Saturday

George Washington (4-0, 3-0) at Germantown (2-2, 2-0), 2 p.m. Washington's defense has to keep a close eye on multipurpose standout and Pittsburgh recruit Will Parks. Pick: Washington, 28-6.

West Catholic (1-3) vs. Archbishop Ryan (3-1), at Northeast, 7 p.m. The improved Raiders could make a big statement by defeating the lackluster Burrs. Pick: West, 23-21.

Sunday

No. 9 Father Judge (3-1) vs. St. Joseph's Prep (3-1), at Plymouth Whitemarsh, 1 p.m. Look for a lot of scoring in this Catholic League Class AAAA clash. Pick: Judge, 34-28.
