Four kittens were found dead - three mutilated - in a Chester County yard, officials said.

"There were three different criminal acts on the kittens," said Rich Britton, Chester County SPCA spokesperson. "One was cut in half, one bludgeoned, and one disemboweled."

The cause of death of the fourth kitten was inconclusive. A necropsy was scheduled, Britton said.

The kittens, between four and eight weeks old, had been killed within the last two weeks. They were part of a colony cared for by Nancy and Richard Simes of Coatesville.

"We are afraid to look out the front door to see what else has happened," said Richard Simes, 62, a retired steelworker. Remains of two of the kittens were found on their porch, he said.

The Simeses have spayed and neutered part of the group of about 15 cats, and regularly feed the animals, SPCA officials said.

The couple called local authorities, who contacted the SPCA about a week ago, said Britton. He called the act heinous.

None of the adult cats in the group was injured, Britton said. Other kittens were taken into the home.

The SPCA is asking that anyone with information contact the Humane Investigations Department at 610-692-6113, Ext. 213. All information, Britton said, will be kept confidential.
