  • "It's just so great being on this team," says Gateway center midfielder Julie Kowalski (right).

Julie Kowalski has played a variety of positions for Gateway's field hockey team, and all of them well.

This season, she is the center midfielder on a Gators squad that is a major contender in the Colonial Conference Patriot Division and considered a viable threat in South Jersey Group 1.

A second-team all-conference selection as a junior, Kowalski is a member of the National Honor Society. She is undecided on a college, but hopes to play field hockey and major in art therapy. One of her courses this year is Advanced Placement art.

Question: How long have you been playing field hockey?

Story continues below.

Answer: Six years. I used to be a soccer player, but I started playing field hockey and really loved it.

Q: You also have been a forward and a back, but does playing center midfield suit you best?

A: It's my favorite position because you get to control the field and work with your team on both offense and defense.

Q: Favorite type of music?

A: I am a country music fan.

Q: What is the best part of being affiliated with Gateway field hockey?

A: The team itself. We are a giant family, and there are no individuals. We work so well together, and it's just so great being on this team.

Q: What interests you in art therapy?

A: It combines my passion for art and helping people.

Q: What type of artist are you?

A: I can do any style, but I am more of an abstract artist.

Q: Favorite medium?

A: Oil paint and colored pencil.
