"He hasn't gone for the hype and wants to focus on his teammates and helping the team win," Timber Creek coach Rob Hinson said.
That is why Lambert doesn't want to miss any practice time and certainly any games to deal with recruiting and will do most of the legwork after the season.
And he has not been overwhelmed by the recruiting process one bit.
"It's just a great opportunity that I have," Lambert said. "I am just taking it all in right now."
Even Lambert was a little taken aback by the words of one of the recruiters - Alabama coach Nick Saban. Besides winning a national championship with the Crimson Tide and earlier at LSU, Saban is a former NFL head coach.
One of Lambert's worries when being recruited is that a school will move him from linebacker to defensive end. Saban isn't one of those coaches who is looking in that direction.
"Coach Saban told Quanzell that when you are in the NFL, you will be there as a linebacker," Hinson said.
Lambert's reaction to that statement?
"Wow."
Then Lambert elaborated.
"He has coached so many great players, and for him to say that about me was unbelievable," Lambert said.
Of course, Lambert won't tip his recruiting hand at this point. He lists the five schools to which he plans official visits as Northwestern, Iowa, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Nebraska.
Lambert said he is also considering other schools. He has made unofficial visits to Pitt, Penn State, Connecticut, and Boston College.
Who knows if any other contenders will surface, but true to his personality, Lambert will be methodical in making the choice.
A quality student who plans to major in mechanical engineering, Lambert is still getting used to being identified as a football player.
He didn't begin playing organized football until eighth grade and laughs when asked if he was good from the beginning.
"I was a little lost out there," he said.
