La Salle's Rambo happy with commitment to Maryland lacrosse

Matt Rambo said he took his time with his college decision, and he had good reason to. One of the nation's top lacrosse talents, Rambo had plenty of suitors before he made an oral commitment last week to attend the University of Maryland.

The La Salle High junior midfielder rattled off 58 goals last season after scoring 78 as a freshman at Abington. He transferred to the Explorers a month before the start of last season.

He said he went to La Salle to boost his grades.

At Maryland, Rambo plans to major in either business or education. After two visits to College Park, Rambo said he enjoyed the atmosphere and the large size of the campus, where he attended a Terrapins basketball game.

Rambo is the No. 1-ranked junior in the nation by ESPN and played this summer in both the Under Armour and U.S. Lacrosse all-American games.

"I got to meet a lot of people," Rambo said. "It was a pretty successful summer."

In his freshman year at Abington, Rambo had the opportunity to play a season alongside his older brother, Rich. Rich Rambo then moved on to Hofstra, which was also one of the finalists for Matt because it would have given the brothers a chance to play two more years together.

He also considered Virginia and North Carolina.

Although he won't be playing with his brother, Rambo will join former Explorers teammate and longtime friend Kevin Forster.

"He told me how it is there, told me about the coaches," Rambo said. "He helped my decision a little bit."

Malvern Prep junior Chad Rafferty also committed to Maryland. He and Rambo have talked to each other about the school and have played together in the club circuit.
