A Closer Look: Garnet Valley-Ridley game

October 05, 2011|By Rick O'Brien, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Last year, after two straight losses to Central League newcomer Garnet Valley, Ridley gained a measure of revenge by pounding the injury-depleted Jaguars, 38-0.

The two will meet up again, this time with plenty on the line, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Phil Marion Field.

With a victory, Garnet Valley (4-1 overall, 4-0 Central) can keep pace with co-leader Springfield (5-0, 4-0). Ridley (4-1, 3-1) needs a win to stay in the hunt for at least a share of the crown.

Story continues below.

Here is a closer look at the game:

Coaches. Mike Ricci is 153-104-1 in 25 seasons at Garnet Valley. For Ridley, Dennis Decker is 27-5 in three years.

Shootout. The Jaguars broke four school records in last week's 76-38 triumph over Harriton: most points (76), touchdowns (11), and extra points (10) in a game, and longest punt return (80 yards).

Breakthrough effort. In a 27-7 victory over Marple Newtown on Sept. 23, the Green Raiders' Jalen Randolph rushed for 270 yards and four TDs. He is joined in the backfield by bruising fullback Shane Dougherty.

Catalyst. In Garnet Valley's triple-option scheme, 5-foot-9, 185-pound fullback Justin Pyle has carried 68 times for 480 yards and one score.

Against Harriton, he netted 246 yards and four TDs on 32 attempts.

Air attack. Ridley quarterback Matt Davis spreads the ball among receivers Mike Smoluk, Mike Crowley, and Aaron Graf.

Up front. In a run-dominated offense, Garnet Valley's line is headed by tackle John Guest (6-2, 220), guard Matt Donoghue (6-4, 255), and center Donte Burgese (6-0, 190).

Stalwarts. Ridley's defense, giving up 12.2 points a game, is headed by end Matt Sinex, outside linebacker Randolph, middle linebacker Dougherty, and back DaQuan Hill.

Injury report. For Garnet Valley, split end A.J. DePietro (broken collarbone) and outside linebacker John Blair (foot) are out with season-ending injuries.

Quotable. Ricci, on Pyle: "He runs so hard. He has got great vision and is a very determined runner."

Pick: Ridley, 26-20.
