The 6-1, 170-pound Chakey is the Fords' senior quarterback and Thursday night he steered his squad past Washington, 36-15, in a nonleague game at Northeast.
Aside from turning eight carries into 33 yards and two touchdowns, and passing 11-for-17 for 152 yards and another score (to Matt Galambos), Chakey did a masterful job with ballhandling and maintaining control out of regular and shotgun formations.
Washington was guilty of seven encroachment infractions, some of them costly.
"The little things can be a big factor," Chakey said. "We were going with a lot of different snap counts. I was working all week with my center, Chris Dibello, both before and after practice, to get down the different calls. And then we got out there, and my linemen mostly stayed still.
"I prefer an up-tempo pace. That was why the coaches went with me last season [midway through], because of the energy I bring. I like to get up on the ball and go. But sometimes you have to work the clock, while still moving the ball, and we did that in the fourth quarter [as Washington was limited to three plays]."
Chakey's scoring runs covered 8 and 3 yards. His TD pass to Galambos was a 6-yarder; Galambos had posted the previous six-pointer, a 5-yarder, on a trick-play toss from Steve Fitzgerald.
Galambos finished with seven catches for 52 yards and joined teammate Anthony Hill in making an interception. Chris Morgan added 84 yards on three snags.
The Eagles' TDs were lengthy - a 55-yard run by Hakeem Sillman (17-163) and a 95-yard pass from Alfonso Augustine to Kendale Truitt.
Thursday night games are quite uncommon for Inter-Ac schools, of course, and this one wasn't exactly in HS' backyard.
"We got out at 2:30 and left school at 3:15," Chakey said. "We didn't have a team meal. Guys kind of brought second lunches, I guess you'd say. Most of the guys ate in the locker room after we arrived. I had my 'dinner' on the bus."
No fodder for food critics.
"I was running late for school this morning," he said, laughing. "My mom made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich."
Chakey (pronounced Chake-ee) lives in Havertown and is a three-sport athlete. He'll play something or another this winter, then concentrate on his main sport, lacrosse (midfielder).
"I'll probably play lacrosse in college," he said. "But football is always a possibility."
If nothing else, he'll watch games from the stands.
