West Deptford wins in a romp

West Deptford had something to prove Friday night in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division football game against visiting Haddon Heights.

The Eagles needed to bounce back after a loss to division rival Haddonfield a week earlier and thought they had the personnel to do it.

They did just that, as seven players scored, with senior Jake Hannan at the controls, and the Eagles prevailed, 49-6.

The victory improved the Eagles to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in the division with division games remaining against Collingswood and Overbrook. Meanwhile, Haddon Heights slipped to 3-1 and 2-1, with divisional battles to come with Sterling and Haddonfield.

Story continues below.

Connor Smith, Gerald Towns, Tommy Jakubowski, Phil Fisher, Arrin Bundy, Josh Cornelius, and Isaiah Worthy scored the Eagles' TDs in a game that turned out to be so one-sided that a running clock went into effect with 10 minutes, 44 seconds remaining.

That's when Worthy, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore running back, scored the final touchdown on a 1-yard plunge to give West Deptford a 43-point lead.

Hannan didn't throw that much - he was 4 for 9 for 104 yards and a TD - but he established his leadership from the start.

"Jake Hannan is going into his third year at starting quarterback, and he's lost two football games," said West Deptford coach Clyde Folsom, who described the game as a character test. "He just finds a way to win. He's tough, intelligent, team-oriented and is a good, solid high school football player.

"You learn a lot more when you lose than when you win. Tonight was a test to see how much we learned from a week ago."

West Deptford led the Garnets, 21-6, at halftime; however, Haddon Heights scored first and looked as though it had the momentum.

The Garnets' Kenny Lewis blocked a punt, and teammate Alex Thompson recovered on West Deptford's 35-yard line. From there, quarterback Nick Lundholm engineered a 10–play drive that ended with Brandon Joyner's 4-yard TD run with 1:48 left in the period.

The Eagles came roaring back when Connor Smith took a reverse and raced 45 yards to the end zone. With no time remaining on the clock, Josh Cornelius kicked the first of three first-half extra points, and West Deptford took a 7-6 lead.

The Eagles added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, on an 8-yard run by Gerald Towns with 6:05 left and a 64-yard pass from Hannon to Jakubowski with 2:25 remaining until halftime.

"To us, this is a playoff game," Folsom said. "It very easily could determine the outcome of our season if we want to be in the thick of things at the end."
