Flyers appreciate van Riemsdyk's backing up Giroux

NEWARK, N.J. - When Claude Giroux, the Flyers' diminutive center, was smacked into the boards by Boston's mammoth Zdeno Chara during Thursday's second period, James van Riemsdyk didn't hesitate.

He went after Chara.

"That," Flyers center Danny Briere said, "took a lot of guts."

Chara is 6-foot-9, 260 pounds. Van Riemsdyk is 6-3, 200.

"I think those type of circumstances are really good for building a team," coach Peter Laviolette said before Saturday night's game against the New Jersey Devils. "I think our leadership is pretty set right now. We've got some good veteran leaders in place in [Chris] Pronger and Briere and Kimmo [Timonen]. But what I really liked about it was a new team coming together on the ice and sticking up for each another."

The Flyers are expecting increased production from van Riemsdyk, who scored 15 goals as a rookie and 21 last season. He blossomed in last season's playoffs, scoring seven goals in 11 games - and displaying eye-opening speed, getting free for several breakaways.

In the summer, van Riemsdyk moved to Darien, Conn., to work with a personal trainer, Ben Prentiss. He looks stronger.

The strength helped him swat a home run over the left-field wall during batting practice before a Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park last month. Nine Flyers took part, and the righthanded van Riemsdyk was the lone player to slam a homer.

Breakaways

The Flyers used the same lineup Saturday as in their 2-1 win in Boston. Andreas Lilja was the No. 6 defenseman, while Matt Walker sat. Walker is healthy. "Don't turn this into Walker-gate," GM Paul Holmgren said. . . . The Flyers next play on Wednesday, when they host Vancouver in their home opener.
