Cheung runs wild in Coatesville win

October 08, 2011|By Alex Lee, FOR THE INQUIRER

The Coatesville Red Raiders have relied on their big-play offense to produce victories all season.

Saturday was no different, as Coatesville scored six touchdowns to top Ches-Mont League National Division rival Bishop Shanahan, 42-21.

The Raiders (5-1 overall, 2-0 league) were led by senior Dao-Hon Cheung, who carried the ball 23 times for 221 yards and two scores.

North Carolina State-bound quarterback Manny Stocker and Michigan State-bound wideout Kyle Kerrick might be getting more attention, but the 5-foot-11 Cheung has quietly been the Raiders' most consistent offensive performer this season.

Story continues below.

Cheung was contained early by the Eagles defense but struck for 186 yards in the second quarter, including a 92-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-7 late in the half.

"The kid never lost focus, never got down on himself," Ortega said. "He just knew that he was one play away from breaking it, and he did on that 90-yard run."

Ortega continuously called Cheung's number, and early in the second quarter, it was clear that Cheung was beginning to wear down the Eagles defense. Cheung broke off runs of 12, 26, and 18 yards in the period before bursting through the right side of the line for the 92-yarder.

"It feels good," Cheung said afterward. "There is nothing like it. It's the best feeling I have."

Stocker showed his athleticism in the win. The senior threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He routinely escaped from the pocket for big runs, finishing with 63 yards rushing.

But it was Cheung's two first-half touchdowns that set the tone, giving the Red Raiders a 14-point lead that they never relinquished.

Eagles coach Paul Meyers knew that holding in check Coatesville's "big three" would be a key for his team (2-3, 0-3).

"Big plays, that was the difference," Meyers said. "We knew we'd be in for a war, but we were hoping to limit the big plays. That was my pregame speech. Stop the big plays and we'll be right in the game."

Quarterback Ryan Egolf provided most of the offense for Shanahan. The senior was 18-for-31 passing for 185 yards and added 59 yards and two scores on the ground.

Behind Egolf, the Eagles seemed intent on mounting a comeback in the second half. But after they cut the score to 28-14, Raiders return man Chris Jones took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a backbreaking touchdown.
