Near miss could put Joe Paterno in booth for rest of Penn State's season

Penn State coach Joe Paterno has been looking forward all season to coaching an entire game from the sideline as he slowly recovers from injuries to his shoulder and his pelvis. They are the result of a collision with wide receiver Devon Smith early in preseason practice.

However, following a near accident during Saturday's game against Iowa, Paterno could be returning to the press box for the foreseeable future if not for the rest of the season.

As he had in the previous two games, Paterno coached against Iowa from the sideline in the first half then headed to the coaches' booth in the press box for the second half. But he said Saturday's retreat to the press box was necessary because he was "hurting."

"They almost ran over me once" in the first half, Paterno said after the game. "I made a couple of quick moves to get out of the way.

"I was hurting. I'm hurting more now than I have in a week, and that's because I made a stupid move. But I'll be all right."

Paterno was expected to comment further on his condition at Tuesday's teleconference.

Paterno, who discarded his cane about three weeks ago, reiterated about not wanting his players to worry about whether he's staying out of harm's way while standing on the sideline.

"I just don't want to be in the way," he said. "I don't want those kids looking around to see where I am. So I told them at halftime [Saturday], 'You guys are doing all right. Just turn it up a notch and I'll get out of here.' "

The Nittany Lions are home Saturday against Purdue.
