C.B. East gives coach 300th win

October 12, 2011|By Evan Burgos, FOR THE INQUIRER

As the PIAA referee strode up the field and introduced himself to Central Bucks East's soccer coach, he was taken aback once he heard the name of the man with whom he was shaking hands.

"Mike Gorni?" the ref exclaimed. "Man, I've heard that name quite a few times before."

The result that came two hours later helped explain why. With relative ease, C.B. East beat Suburban One League Continental Conference rival Central Bucks South, 3-1, on South's turf.

The victory was far from ordinary.

Story continues below.

Gorni, East's coach for 17 years, earned his 300th career victory. He didn't tell his team prior, and he himself was unaware how close to the milestone he was until the end of last season.

Gorni tried to deflect the credit to his players after the victory, but the look in his eyes was unmistakable: This one was special.

"At this point, it's about the kids playing and winning," said Gorni, who won 44 games as Sun Valley's coach before totaling 256 at East. ". . . I'm really proud of all the teams we've had. I'm most proud of the fact that we've put ourselves in a position to win another league title."

With the win, the Patriots (11-2-1 overall, 10-2 league) all but assure themselves the Continental championship for the fourth time in the past five years. One more victory - against last-place Quakertown on Friday or 3-4 Souderton next Tuesday - would clinch it.

For South (11-4-1, 8-3-1), the loss is demoralizing. Seeking its first Continental title, the Titans lost an opportunity to seize first place and command of the league.

South has dropped three of its last five after beginning the season 8-1. With the league title likely out of hand, South's focus shifts to garnering the highest possible seed for the District 1 tournament, which will begin Oct. 25.

East has not lost since it fell at home to South on Sept. 20, pushing its winning streak to eight games.

A first-half strike from Sean Jenkins, who bent a beautiful ball, which a South defender failed to clear, from 18 yards into the upper left corner of the net, gave the Patriots the lead. They pushed the advantage to 3-0 on second-half goals by Ryan Gleason and Ben Marks.

East keeper Jacob Nesteruk was nearly perfect, making six saves - including two diving deflections - before allowing a goal in the final minute to Brendan Rennie.

"I thought our kids played great today. Quietly great, if that makes sense," Gorni said. "It wasn't a lot of explosiveness, but played really well together."

Well enough to promise a likely league title; surely enough to cement a landmark achievement.
