The Dreddons: Overbrook’s do-it-all twins

October 13, 2011|By Phil Anastasia, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

There are just two Dreddons on the football field for Overbrook.

It just seems like more.

Devon Dreddon, the younger and larger of the twins, plays running back and linebacker. He snaps for punts, kicks off, and returns kicks. He wears No. 14.

Deandre Dreddon, who is older than his brother by two minutes, plays wide receiver and safety. He sees some action at quarterback and is the team's top kick returner. He wears No. 4.

There is no other brother wearing No. 24 or 44. But the twins are so active, and so involved in nearly every aspect of the game for the Rams, it sometimes seems as if there's another out there. Or another two.

"The only things they don't do," Overbrook coach Wade Inge said, "is hold the chains and work the concession stands."

Now seniors, the twins are three-year starters on both sides of the football. They have played some strong games for Overbrook, but they might be coming off their most impressive combined performance in last weekend's 14-12 victory over Collingswood.

Devon Dreddon ran for a touchdown, his team-high fifth of the season. He also generated the eventual winning points in a most unusual way - racing down after snapping the football on a punt to make a tackle and force a fumble, which Collingswood recovered in the end zone for a safety.

"He made four tackles on punts after snapping the ball," Inge said. "He snaps it, runs downfield, and makes a one-on-one tackle. He does it time after time."

Deandre Dreddon also had a highlight game. He had three takeaways in the red zone, a fumble recovery and two interceptions. He returned one of the picks 80 yards for a touchdown. He also had a 65-yard return.

"He was all over the field," Inge said.

The twins grew up and still live in West Berlin. They began playing football with the Interboro youth program as 4-year-olds.

"It's kind of funny," Devon Dreddon said. "We've been together so long, we know how each other thinks."

The twins are competitive with each other. Devon is quick to point out that the back of his helmet features 22 decals for top plays this season, while his brother's helmet has just 12.

Last season, Deandre's helmet had 30 decals, and Devon's had 17.

"I've got plenty of time," Deandre Devon said of the decal race. "I'll get him."

The twins are 5-foot-8, but Devon Dreddon weighs 195 and Deandre Dreddon weighs 170.

"He used to be bigger than me," Devon said. "But now I eat a lot more."
