Letters: Pick up the litter in Philadelphia

Posted: October 13, 2011

IHAVE to agree with letter-writer Andrew Abruzzese about Philadelphia streets being dirty.

On Sunday, I took my two very young children for a bike ride from my parents' house in Port Richmond to Penn Treaty Park, down to Penn's Landing and into Center City to see the Columbus Day Parade. I wanted to show my children some of the sights of the city I proudly called home for the first 28 years of my life. As we were pedaling along, my son asked me why there was so much trash on the street. I was embarrassed and caught off guard by his question.

If the city isn't enforcing its litter laws and can't even have the violators pay their fines, why issue violations at all?

The city has to make violators pay and clean up their property. If the fine is not paid and the property is not cleaned up, then the fine should be doubled.

The city has always asked residents to take care of their neighborhoods. I believe there are many people in Philadelphia who do just that. It would take a miracle to make this city clean, but since Steve Jobs passed away, there's no app for that.

Re Dan Geringer's article "A Peaceable Kingdom" in Tuesday's Daily News:

It's telling that the first thing Mr. Geringer (and most other DN reporters) has to point out is that this mob is nonviolent. Because, let's face it, when these anarchists and anti-capitalists usually get together to protest, destruction, looting and violence are usually the norm.

But the fact that they are nonviolent shouldn't merit a gold star - they're merely, for the time being, fighting their impulses and not acting like animals!

He goes on to write that they are being given free food, free snacks, free bike repair, free garbage pickup, free first aid and free security. They are now asking for free coffee, free tobacco, free tarps, free tents, free ponchos, free blankets, free warm clothes and free plastic storage bins. They are protesting for free health care, free education and a guaranteed job! When does it end? When will they grow up and realize that real Americans work for what they have and if they have less than someone else, work harder, smarter or longer?

OK, it's time for everyone to STOP donating food, clothing and shelter to these people so that they leave Philadelphia.

They've had their protest; now move on to somewhere else. It's costing Philadelphia taxpayers $80,000 a day for these people to sleep in our streets. Not to mention how much it cost for Mayor Nutter to donate a charging station for them to charge their phones and computers.

Way to go, Mayor Nutter, keep them here longer at our expense. I hope it came out of your pocket and not the city's.

Letter-writer Pat Dougherty called the sit-ins a bunch of morons with deplorable signs leaving Philly and other cities dirty and disgusting!

You say the tea party carried themselves with dignity, but you forget they had our president's image on posters saying he's a terrorist and spit on congressmen. At least the Occupy Wall Street folks have legitimate issues instead of your racist chant, "Take back America!" (From whom? The blacks and the rising Spanish population!) As the young people would say, stop hating!

Lowly Eagles

Gotta say I'm not liking the Eagles' "Occupy the Cellar" movement one bit.

So, what do you think of your $100 million dog-killer and the rest of the Eagles with a record of 1-4? Vick and his entire team stink big time!

Obama's mission

Unless you've had your head in the sand for the last nine months, it's painfully obvious that one party is doing everything it can to make our country fail at a time when we need to get out of the fix they put us in over eight years.

George Bush put us trillions of dollars in debt by spending money overseas, while Obama is trying to spend money here to help our own people survive. But unless he gets a pair and starts fighting, nothing is going to happen.
