A closer look: Timber Creek vs. Woodrow Wilson

Last season is ancient history.

But both Timber Creek and Woodrow Wilson wouldn't mind digging up a little of the past for Friday night's West Jersey Football League interdivision clash of unbeaten teams.

Timber Creek would love to recapture the excitement of its dramatic rally for a 32-25 victory at Woodrow Wilson.

And the Tigers, truth to tell, aren't opposed to using that game as motivation for this game.

"That was one of those games for us that we really didn't get over," Woodrow Wilson coach Chris Crowley said. "Our kids remember. Timber Creek is a better team this year, but we feel like we're a better team, too, so something has to give."

Story continues below.

Timber Creek coach Rob Hinson calls last season's victory over Woodrow Wilson, in which his team rallied from a 25-6 deficit late in the third quarter, one of the most exciting in his career.

"I couldn't settle down after that game," Hinson said. "That was so special for our kids."

Timber Creek (4-0), the No. 3 team in The Inquirer's South Jersey rankings, features a dominating defense led by junior linemen Greg Webb and Dajaun Drennon and senior linebacker Quanzell Lambert.

The Chargers offense is led by senior quarterback Calvin Lowe, who threw three touchdown passes in last year's victory, and junior running back Khalil Pierce.

"They are very physical," Crowley said of the Chargers. "This is probably the best team we're going to face all year. Our kids understand the challenge. They know we are going to have to play our best game to win."

Woodrow Wilson (4-0) has been led by quarterback Aaron Spencer, wide receiver T.J. Chambliss, and running back Anthony Haynes, all seniors.

"They are so explosive," Hinson said of the Tigers. "I would put them right there with Pennsauken as being among the most explosive teams in South Jersey. We know we've got our hands full trying to slow them down."

Analysis. Timber Creek is capable of quick-strike offense, and Woodrow Wilson plays solid defense, but this game likely will turn on the matchup between the Chargers defense and the Tigers offense.

Timber Creek's front seven might be the best in South Jersey. It's going to be tough for the Tigers front line to keep Webb, Drennon, Lambert, and company from creating havoc and forcing a couple of turnovers.

Pick: Timber Creek, 19-13.
