Philadelphia police fatally shot a man who refused to drop his gun and fired first at police early Saturday, authorities said.

Lt. Raymond Evers, a spokesman for the commissioner's office, said two uniformed officers from the 25th district in a marked car responded to a radio call of a person with gun around 12:43 a.m. at Ninth and Pike streets in the Hunting Park neighborhood. There officers saw Adolphus Pinkney, 26, of the 3900 block of North Delhi, in the street holding a gun.

"The officers told him several times to drop the gun and he did not," Evers said.

Pinkney fired at the two officers, missing them, Evers said. Both officers returned fire multiple times, Evers said.

Pinkney was pronounced dead at the scene, Evers said.

Four fired cartridge casings were found in the .38 revolver recovered from Pinkney's body, Evers said. Police also found a pellet gun, which looked like a semi-automatic pistol, in Pinkney's waistband, Evers said.

The armed man had entered Olga's Sport Lounge on North Ninth Street, but patrons forced him outside, locked the doors and called 911, 6ABC reported. Police could not immediately confirm that detail.

The two officers have been placed on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and the Police Department's internal affairs shooting team, which is standard protocol for police-involved shootings.

Authorities said Pinkney has five convictions in Philadelphia on charges including aggravated assault, robbery and drug possession.
