Smith commits to WVU

Archbishop Wood's Nate Smith, a quick-footed defensive back, orally committed to play football at West Virginia in a Tuesday news conference at the Warminster school.

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior, also dangerous as a wide receiver and kick returner, chose the Mountaineers over Temple, Michigan State, South Carolina and Toledo.

A transfer from George Washington, Smith has helped the Vikings, ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, to a 6-1 record. They have outscored foes by 303-62.

Smith has been invited to play in the 2011 Chesapeake Bowl. The all-star game is scheduled for Dec. 30 in Maryland.
