Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: O'Hara, Wood run to titles

La Salle's Tom Coyle edged Cardinal O'Hara's Dan Savage by a half-second to win the boys' race at the Catholic League cross-country championships at Belmont Plateau on Saturday.

Coyle, a junior, clocked 15 minutes, 56.2 seconds, nipping Savage (15:56.7) and improving his time from last year's 11th-place finish by 1:16.

Savage led five O'Hara runners among the first 10 finishers to the team championship.

In the girls' competition, St. Hubert junior Teresa Ortiz claimed individual honors with a time of 19:14, beating runner-up Jazmin Booker of West Catholic by 18 seconds.

Archbishop Wood, led by Megan Connell and Kasey Brown with a 3-4 finish, repeated as team champion.

Central. Haverford High swept the team trophies in the league championships at Rose Tree Park in Media. The Fords beat runner-up Strath Haven by 19 points in the girls' meet and by 18 points in the boys' race.

Harriton junior Max Norris clocked 16:24.34, edging senior teammate Peter Downs by four-tenths of a second for first place. Strath Haven's Hannah Grossman easily won the girls' race in 18:03.

 

Girls' Tennis

Top-seeded Rachel Bernstock and Marni Blumenthal of Harriton cruised to the District 1 Class AA doubles championship with a pair of straight-set wins at the Healthplex.

The Rams' duo beat No. 2 seed Arianne Polatnick and Taylor Hoffman of Lower Moreland, 6-2, 6-1, in the title match and will advance to the state tournament on Nov. 4.

Class AAA. Third-seeded Jackie Ciotti and Lauren Banner of Conestoga will meet fifth-seeded Sona Hussian and Katie Reilly of Pennsbury for the title on Wednesday after each team survived quarterfinal and semifinal wins.

The Conestoga pair ousted No. 2 seed Anne Marie Devlin and Danielle Mustin of Wissahickon in the semifinals. Top-seeded Corinne Fleet and Becca Rodgers of West Chester Henderson were upset, 6-1, 6-3, by Central Bucks South's Margot Tovia and Abby Gamarnik in the quarterfinals.

 

Boys' Soccer

Shipley held top-ranked Conestoga to a scoreless tie in a nonleague matchup, marking the first blemish on the Pioneers' record this fall.

Shipley (11-3-1) goalie Pablo Sisniega made seven saves, and Clark Fox stopped four shots for his 13th shutout for Conestoga (16-0-1), ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.

The game was stopped by referees without playing overtime.
