Wed. S.J. girls’ roundup: Mainland tops Atlantic City

Amanda Ryan stopped eight shots, including a penalty stroke, and Jenn Eisenberg supplied timely scoring to send No. 8 seed Mainland past ninth-seeded Atlantic City, 3-1, on Wednesday in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 field hockey tournament.

After setting up Gianna Giacinto's early goal, Eisenberg put in the eventual game-winner with 35 seconds left in the first half. Eisenberg added an insurance goal with 1 minute, 35 seconds remaining in the match, ensuring the Mustangs' trip to face top-seeded Eastern in a quarterfinal on Monday.

Emily Wolfson scored off an Alana Storr pass to pull Atlantic City within 2-1 with just under 11 minutes to go in regulation. Vikings netminder Cassidy Shea turned aside 15 shots.

In another South Jersey Group 4 opener, Corrine Etter scored twice in a seven-minute span midway through the first half to put No. 7 Millville on track for a 5-0 victory over 10th-seeded Triton.

Carly Meese added a pair of second-half goals, while Megan Hoffman contributed two assists, and goalie Lauren Robinson made two saves. Next up for the Thunderbolts is a quarterfinal Monday at No. 2 seed Shawnee.

Central Jersey Group 4. Amanda Johnson knocked in Alissa Martin's pass off a penalty corner with 54 seconds to go in the first half, and No. 7 seed Rancocas Valley held on to nip 10th-seeded Lenape, 1-0, in an opening-round game.

Sydney Duncker posted the shutout for the Red Devils, who will travel to play No. 2 seed Pennsauken in a quarterfinal on Monday.

Michaela Horner had a goal and an assist to pace Cherokee's balanced attack in a 3-0 victory at No. 8 seed Jackson Memorial. The ninth-seeded Chiefs will face top-seeded Toms River East in a quarterfinal on Monday.

Rachel Lombardi and Lauren Thomas had Cherokee's other goals, with Brooke Hunt chipping in a pair of assists in support of goalie Michelle Casl (two saves).

Blaire Janney stopped 18 shots, but 11th-seeded Cherry Hill East couldn't provide much offensive support in a 4-1 loss at No. 6 seed Toms River South.

Dailyn Brook fed Megan Thompson for the Cougars' lone goal.

 

Soccer

Second-half goals by Nikki Adams and Eleni Dendrinos enabled Schalick to pull out a 2-0 victory at Pitman, giving the Cougars the Tri-County Conference Classic Division championship.

Courtney Miller faced just two shots in posting the shutout for Schalick, which finished with a 10-0-2 record in division play.

Olympic. Nikki Brooks supplied shutout goaltending, and Lenape received scoring from five players as the host Indians rolled over Winslow Township, 5-0.

Melissa Gall and Ashley Koester scored for Cherokee in a 2-1 overtime win at Eastern.

Elise Pratt's two goals powered Timber Creek to a 4-2 triumph at Triton. Paige Bergman had both goals for the host Mustangs, including a penalty kick.

Kristen Niedrach and Erin Smith each had two goals and an assist to highlight Shawnee's 4-0 victory at Cherry Hill East.

Nonleague. Shelby Lyon set the Seneca single-season record with her 11th and 12th goals in a 2-0 win at Egg Harbor Township.
