Ward, 'Canes shut out the Blackhawks, 3-0

Cam Ward made 30 saves in his first shutout of the season, and the Carolina Hurricanes snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-0, in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday night.

Tim Brent scored on a deflection and Brandon Sutter and Jiri Tlusty added third-period goals for the Hurricanes, who claimed their first win since Oct. 18 at Boston.

"We got dominated in all areas of the game. We weren't very good tonight," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "They were a more determined team, and it was clear from the outset. . . . I didn't like how we played."

Corey Crawford stopped 30 shots for the Blackhawks, who were beaten in regulation for the first time since opening night.

Sharks outplay Wings

Joe Thornton scored twice, and Antti Niemi made 30 saves in the San Jose Sharks' 4-2 win over the host Detroit Red Wings.

Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist, and Ryane Clowe also scored for San Jose, which won its fourth straight. Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit, which has lost three in a row.

Nicklas Lidstrom, the subject of a video tribute in the in the first period for reaching the 1,500-game plateau last Saturday in Washington, had two assists, and Jimmy Howard made 26 saves.

Elsewhere: Devan Dubnyk had a season-high 40 saves, and defensemen Cam Barker and Andy Sutton each scored their first goals of the season, leading the Edmonton Oilers past the host Colorado Avalanche, 3-1. Ryan Smyth added a goal and two assists to help Edmonton win its fourth straight. . . . Roman Horak had a goal and an assist, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 28 saves as the host Calgary Flames beat the St. Louis Blues, 3-1. Calgary improved to 3-1-1 on its six-game homestand.
