Man dies in Gloucester County house fire

Posted: October 30, 2011

An unidentified man died of smoke inhalation in a fire in an abandoned Washington Township house Friday night, county officials said Saturday.

The trash-filled house on Berlin-Cross-Keys Road was frequently used by squatters, according to a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

The body was so badly burned that a forensic dentist had to take dental impressions Saturday to try to identify the person, the spokesman said.

Fire officials said they did not know what caused the blaze in the ranch-style house.

The house has been vacant for more than 10 years, and its owner lives in Florida, the spokesman said.
