Little Flower reaches soccer final

Little Flower already had to wait an extra day. What more could an extra period be?

On Monday, the Sentinels needed overtime to knock off Lansdale Catholic, 2-1, at Northeast High and advance to the Catholic League girls' soccer championship game.

Originally slated for Sunday at Archbishop Ryan, the game was moved due to the weekend's weather.

Just 2 minutes into the extra period, Courtney Connelly knocked in the game-winner off a rebound from Ursula Coyle's shot off the post.

Courtney Weidner had tied the game with 11 minutes left in regulation and Megan Cullen posted the win with eight saves.

Little Flower will meet two-time defending champion Archbishop Wood in the title game on Thursday night at 6 at Ryan.

The Vikings easily fended off Ryan, 5-0, on Monday at Northeast.

Kelsey Celline and Carly Holesworth both scored a pair of goals while sophomore Deanna Messner recorded four saves for her 11th shutout of the season.

District 1. Olivia Rosenberger picked a good time to record her first career hattrick as she led Gwynedd-Mercy over Merion Mercy, 3-1, in a Class AA semifinal.

The Monarchs fell behind 1-0 early before Rosenberg rattled off three straight goals. They'll meet Villa Joseph Marie in Wednesday night's final at 5:45 at Souderton.

The Jems downed Harriton on Monday night.

Kristen Miller's scored once in each half and helped lead Strath Haven over visiting Lower Merion, 3-0, in a Class AAA quaterfinal.

 

Field Hockey

Shipley had no problem scoring goals this time around, as the Gators trounced visiting Germantown Friends, 5-0, in the Friends Schools League semifinal.

On Oct. 6, Shipley scraped by with a 1-0 win over the Tigers.

Senior Alex Cones recorded three saves for her 10th shutout of the season on Monday, while five players added goals.

Shipley will host Moorestown Friends on Thursday at 2:15for the league title. The Foxes nipped Westtown, 1-0, in Monday's other semifinal.

Shipley has won three straight titles and five of the last six.

Catholic. Kerry Hunt and Katie Kelly scored twice each to lead Archbishop Carroll over Archbishop Prendergast, 6-1, in the league semifinal at Cardinal O'Hara.

Hunt and Keara McNulty both recorded two assists for the Patriots.

In the other semifinal, O'Hara knocked off Archbishop Wood, 1-0.

 

Tennis

Germantown Friends remained undefeated in league play as it downed visiting Abington Friends, 3-2, in the Friends Schools League semifinal.

Joanna Booth won 6-4, 6-2 at first singles as Germantown Friends (7-0, league) took all three singles matches.

The Tigers will host Shipley on Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. in the league title game. Shipley knocked off Friends' Central, 3-2, behind Tayller Marcee's deciding-win at third singles.

The Tigers (7-0) have never finished a season undefeated and haven't won a title since at least 1981, as head coach Jessica Smith said it may even be longer.

 

Volleyball

Marina Sharkey helped guide Archbishop Carroll to it's first Catholic League title since 1997 with a 3-2 win over Cardinal O'Hara on Sunday night at Cabrini College.

The senior led the way with three blocks and 23 kills, as the Patriots rallied to a 15-13 win in the deciding game.
