Jackpots: $78M won, $245M tonight

Posted: November 02, 2011

Easy choice for lottery players today:

Powerball has a $245 million jackpot, Mega Millions $12 million.

If no one hits Powerball tonight, expect it to soar past $300 million for the first time in four years. The bigger the jackpot, the bigger the frenzy - the last hike was $42 million.

The cash payout, $146 million, is already the biggest in more than five years, reflecting very strong sales. The annuity, though, has lagged compared to recent years because of low interest rates, according to the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Mega Millions rebooted because a single California matched all the numbers drawn Tuesday night: 27, 31, 39, 40 and 46, with a Mega Ball of 36.

The annuity jackpot was worth $78 million.

The winning ticket was purchased at 1 Stop, 703 Spring St., Paso Robles, north of San Luis Obispo in central California.

Matching the first five numbers were two tickets sold in Ohio, another two in Kentucky, and one each in New York, Texas and Arizona. Each is worth at least $250,000, and the Texas ticket scored $1 million by also having the Megaplier multiplier option.

Powerball and Mega Millions are each played in more than three dozen states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
