Owen J. Roberts advances to final

Two years ago, the Owen J. Roberts field hockey team reached the PIAA District 1 Class AAA championship game for the first time in school history only to lose to Central Bucks South, 1-0, on Maddie Harding's goal.

The Wildcats hope to make up for that outcome Saturday when they meet surprising Unionville for this season's district crown.

Owen J. Roberts earned the finals berth with a 3-0 victory over North Penn on Wednesday at Central Bucks West.

Haley D'Orsaneo, who was a sophomore in 2009, collected a pair of goals for the fifth-seeded Wildcats as they improved to an impressive 22-2. No other area team has won that many games this season. Their losses were to District 3 power Parkland, 2-1, and to District 11's Emmaus, 7-1. Emmaus is ranked sixth in the country by the Top of the Circle website.

Story continues below.

"I didn't get to play much varsity my sophomore year, but I remember the game against South and what a disappointment it was to lose, D'Orsaneo recalled.

She is confident that the Wildcats are ready to face Unionville (17-3-1).

"We played pretty well today," D'Orsaneo said.

The Wildcats never appeared in any danger of losing to the Maidens as they kept the ball in the North Penn half of the field much of the afternoon. North Penn (15-6) entered the game having knocked off top seed Central Bucks South in the Titans' opening game of the playoffs. Owen J. Roberts, the Pioneer Athletic Conference champion, ended up with an 8-2 edge in offensive penalty corners.

"North Penn likes to play changing the direction of the ball," Owen J. Roberts coach Clarence Jennelle said. "We tried to play defense by playing the redirect. It meant more running for us, which means you can get tired, but I believe it worked in our favor."

D'Orsaneo got her first goal with 15 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the first half on a pass into the circle from Jen Schweppe.

"I just tapped it in," D'Orsaneo said. Her second goal came with 3:54 left in the half. Once again, D'Orsaneo tapped in a hit by Amanda Fuertsch.

The championship games for Class AAA and AA will make up a doubleheader on Saturday. Eleventh seed Unionville beat seventh seed Mount St. Joseph, 4-3, to earn the right to meet Owen J. Roberts in the Class AAA title game.

Although no official site has been announced, the championshp games most likely will be at Wissahickon. The Class AA game between Upper Perkiomen and Villa Maria Academy is set for 3:30 p.m., with the Class AAA game to follow at 5:30.

The top-six finishers from Class AAA make it into the PIAA state playoffs, which begin next week. The top three from Class AA qualify.
