U. Darby police seek info on fatal shooting of man, 18

Upper Darby police are looking for information in the Tuesday shooting death of an 18-year-old, and think an earlier fight may offer some clues.

Melvin Stewart was shot in the head in the 200 block of Samson Street just after midnight. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and later died, said Michael J. Chitwood, superintendent of police.

"No one saw anything that we are aware of right now," said Chitwood. Area residents reported hearing a single gunshot, he said.

On Friday, Stewart was involved in a fight outside a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 1000 block of Garrett Road. Stewart, who did not cooperate with police, was treated for facial injuries and released from Delaware County Hospital, said Chitwood.

Chitwood said they are looking into a connection between the two events. They believe Stewart was shot because he may have owed money for a drug debt, Chitwood said. Police are trying to track down Stewart's acquaintances for more information.

Anyone with information is asked to call Upper Darby police at 610-734-7686.
