Thurs. Pa. boys' roundup: Holy Ghost Prep rallies

Holy Ghost Prep spotted Upper Moreland a 1-0 halftime lead before the Firebirds' offense shifted gears and rallied for a 3-1 victory in the District 1 Class AA boys' soccer tournament championship game at Central Bucks West on Thursday.

Tommy Hayes gave the Bears (9-4) an early lead before Tim Lazorko tied the game 4 minutes into the second half off a corner kick by Kyle Klein.

Eight minutes later, Klein scored the go-ahead goal, and Colin O'Neill added an insurance score to secure the title. Jim Gavaghan made four saves in goal for the Firebirds (17-1-1), ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Holy Ghost will face District 12 champ Conwell-Egan in the first round of the PIAA state tournament on Tuesday.11.8

District 12 Class AAA. La Salle goalie Leonardo Romero broke the school record for shutouts in a season, highlighting a 3-0 victory over Washington in the championship game at Northeast.

Romero made five saves in his 16th shutout, topping the record set by his brother, Hector, in 2003. Hector Romero now instructs Leonardo as the La Salle goalies coach.

Darius Madison scored two goals for the second straight day, Matt Basara had a goal, and Chris Valoski and Ben Wild notched assists in the Explorers' first district title win.

"Our guys came out and played sounds soccer today," La Salle (19-1) coach Bob Peffle said. "They settled down early and passed the ball well."

District 12 Class A. Julian Melchiore had a solid game in goal with 10 saves, and Harry Taggart scored a pair of second-half goals 10 minutes apart as Masterman won the championship, 3-1, over MaST Charter at Northeast.

Joey Powell scored the Blue Dragons' first goal in the 25th minute, helping his team earn a berth in the state tournament. Taggart scored in the 55th and 65th minutes.

Pa. Independent Schools. Episcopal Academy won its first-round game, 2-1, over visiting Friends' Central on the first career goal by fullback Sam Lawlor with 5 minutes left.

Dan Hoy, who scored Germantown Academy's only goal in regulation, joined teammates Adam Villari, Jared Whitman and Bobby Flood with successful penalty kicks in the postgame shootout as the Patriots squeezed past host Chestnut Hill in the quarterfinals. The game ended in a 1-1 tie through overtime, forcing the tiebreaker.

Tri-County. A.J. Bishop's three goals gave the junior a school single-season record of 40 goals and pushed Phelps to a 6-2 win over visiting Collegium Charter in the league playoff semifinals.

Bishop also had two assists. Phelps will face West-Mont Christian for the title on Monday.

 

Football

Yvon Dessus completed half of his eight passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns while directing Overbrook's 26-6 Public League interdivision victory at Olney.

Marke Scott caught TD passes for Dessus and Michael Shenoster, and the Panthers' defense featured nine combined sacks by Nequan McIntosh, Khalil Havens and Justin Brown.

Olney's Sam Fortune raced 99 yards for a late TD on the first play after the Trojans' defense had a goal-line stand.

University City 24, Southern 12 - The Jaguars (2-8) converted three touchdown passes by Joshua Fenwick to Marcus Lyles into a win at Southern (1-8). Davon Wise had two interceptions, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for the winners' defense.

Roxborough 32, Mastbaum 14 - Tymere Blue ran for two touchdowns, and Dre'von Williams hit DeAndre Harriott with a pair of TD passes as Roxborough (5-5) knocked off visiting Mastbaum (3-7).
