Wood earns third straight Catholic title

Archbishop Wood became the first girls' soccer team to win three straight Catholic League championships, but not before surviving a major scare Thursday night from Little Flower, a team it had beaten by two goals to finish the league season.

Carly Hoelsworth, Jackie Pierson, and Kelsey Celline each scored a goal as the Vikings won, 3-2, and earned the District 12 Class AAA berth in the PIAA playoffs, which will open Tuesday.

The Vikings (19-2), who lost to Peters Township in last season's state final, are expected to host an opening-round game, most likely in South Philadelphia against a team from District 1.

Story continues below.

The victory was the 18th straight for Wood, ranked No. 7 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.

It was Celline's 34th goal of the season that actually provided the margin of victory for Wood. She is the school's all-time leading scorer with 81 goals. She needs one more goal to tie the school season record, which she set last year.

Celline followed up on a blocked shot by Sentinels goalie Megan Cullen to push the winner in.

"Little Flower was guarding me closely, so that left some of my teammates open on other occasions," Celline said.

One of those occasions was Hoelsworth's goal, which tied the score, 1-1, with 17 minutes to play in the first half.

She put the ball in the right lower corner of the net.

Little Flower (10-3-1) had taken the lead, 1-0, on a perfectly executed header by junior Ursula Coyle, who accounted for both Sentinels goals.

The Vikings took the lead, 2-1, on Pierson's header with a little less than 20 minutes to play in the first half.

"We were really looking forward to playing in states again," Pierson said. "We got a taste of it last year.

"We had seen Little Flower, so we felt we knew what to expect."

Celline made it 3-1 with her goal at the 9:06 mark. It got interesting when Coyle scored her second goal with 11:49 to play.

"We weren't about to give in to them," Coyle said.

"We may have been down at halftime, but we came back."
