Thurs. Pa. girls' roundup: Shipley takes title with shutout

Senior team captain Avery Safford scored a pair of goals and guided Shipley to its fourth consecutive Friends Schools League field hockey championship with a 4-0 win over visiting Moorestown Friends in the title game on Thursday.

The Gators (16-2-1), unbeaten in their last 15 games, got single goals from Tori Messerschmidt and Ilana Wolfson, and Elizabeth Wilcox and Wolfson had assists.

Safford, who will attend Richmond next fall, knocked in her 15th and 16th goals of the season.

Shipley goalie Alex Cones secured her 12th shutout by making four saves.

Pa. Independent Schools. Catherine Perlmutter set up Maggie Oberkircher's goal with 3:36 left in the second half, lifting Germantown Academy to a 1-0 win over visiting Hill School in the tournament quarterfinals.

Tyler Wellington made four saves for the shutout, putting the Patriots in the semifinals on Tuesday11.8 at against the winner of Friday's Penn Charter-Notre Dame matchup.

Inter-Ac. Episcopal Academy clinched at least a share of the league title with a 5-1 win over visiting Baldwin. Calli Kilmer scored twice, and Lexi Curry and Alana Dumas each had a goal and an assist.

 

Soccer

Friends' Central used its stifling defense to complete a remarkable run through the Friends Schools League this fall, winning the league championship, 1-0, over visiting Germantown Friends.

Josephine Fisher scored the goal with 10 minutes left, heading in a pass off a free kick by Tess Wei.

Meghan Cartafalsa made 14 saves in getting the shutout, aided by strong defense from freshmen Sophie McFarland and Abby Crowley.

Friends' Central, which did not allow a goal to a league opponent this season, has won 10 straight shutouts since a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 14, including four of its last six by 1-0 scores.

Inter-Ac. Episcopal Academy dealt visiting Baldwin a 4-0 setback with four saves by goalie Ali Singley, and two goals by Kristen Hinckley.

 

Volleyball

Merion Mercy rallied from a game down to win the District 1 Class AA championship, 18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 29-27, over Pope John Paul II at Upper Dublin.

District 1 Class A. In the district final at Upper Dublin, Sacred Heart swept Calvary Baptist, 25-21, 25-10, 25-11.
