Firefighter honored in Chesco

Chester County's Hero Plaque program, modeled after one started in Philadelphia in 2000 by lawyer and boxing promoter Jimmy Binns, expanded Wednesday to add a tribute to a fallen firefighter to the plaques lining the Market Street sidewalk of the historic courthouse in West Chester.

A brief ceremony attended by about 100 firefighters and law enforcement personnel honored Roy A. Harris, assistant chief of the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company in Unionville. He died May 25, 1982, when he and four other firefighters were struck by a vehicle while refueling a pumper truck after a fire.

Speaking on behalf of more than a dozen of Harris' relatives, John A. "Jackie" Weer, Chester County's assistant chief fire marshal, called his uncle "a mentor to most and a friend to all," someone who inspired his family to pursue community service. Harris' plaque was unveiled alongside eight others, all honoring fallen police officers. One of them, Kennett Square Officer William W. Davis, was Harris' cousin, Weer said. - Kathleen Brady Shea
