Phelps blanks West-Mont Christian to earn Tri-County boys' soccer crown

Phelps rattled off four goals after halftime and easily rolled over West-Mont Christian, 4-0, on Monday afternoon at United Sports to capture the Tri-County League boys' soccer championship.

A.J. Bishop recorded his school-record 41st goal of the season, while Francisco DeLeon scored twice in a three-minute span to increase the Lions' lead.

Michael Shieh recorded eight saves to post his seventh shutout of the season and help Phelps win its first league crown since 2007.

Inter-Ac. Germantown Academy's Matt Miller headed in a throw-in midway through the second half to tie visiting Chestnut Hill, 1-1.

Jared Whitman's long distance flip-throw reached the back post where Miller, a defenseman, was waiting
to finish it home.


Girls' Soccer

Tess Wei's perfectly directed free kick from 40-yards sneaked under the crossbar for the game-winning goal as Friends' Central turned away visiting Springside, 2-1, in the quarterfinal of Pa. Independent Schools tournament.

The Phoenix will travel to Episcopal Academy on Tuesday for the semifinal at 2 p.m.

Inter-Ac. Visiting Agnes Irwin easily downed Penn Charter, 6-0, behind the two-goal efforts of Marin Bloise and Lauren Schafrank.

 

Field Hockey

Emily Wetz scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the second half, as Agnes Irwin won, 2-1, at Inter-Ac foe Penn Charter. Katherine O'Donnell scored in the first half for the Quakers.
