Tues. Pa. girls' and boys' roundup: Archbishop Carroll blanks the Mount

Archbishop Carroll combined solid defense with a first-half goal by Katie Kelly to trip Mount St. Joseph, 1-0, on Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA state Class AAA field hockey tournament at Germantown.

Kelly netted an unassisted goal with 10 minutes left before intermission.

Carroll goalie Becca Brosious managed 10 saves in the face of an offensive assault by the Magic, who had more corners, 14-4.

Also in Class AAA, Spring-Ford suffered a 3-2 loss to District 11 champ Emmaus at Whitehall. Lex Versak and Alyssa Chillano scored first-hoalf goals for the Rams.

State Class AA. Caroline Troncelitti scored her 100th career goal, highlighting Villa Maria's 2-0 shutout of Manheim Central in the first round at Wissahickon.

Sam Mueller also scored, and Hurricanes' goalie Maddie Joyce notched her 11th shutout with two saves.

Pa. Independent Schools. Top-seeded Episcopal Academy subdued Shipley, 4-1, in the semifinal at Germantown Academy and advanced to the title game on Thursday.

Lexi Curry and Alana Dumas each scored two goals, while Leslie MacManus and Carly Ciccotti had assists. Goalie Giana Pileggi made seven saves.

Notre Dame also earned a championship berth by ousting Germantown Academy, 3-1, at Episcopal. Moira Putsch scored twice, Victoria Monzo had a goal, and Irish goalie Emily Fuss (six saves) allowed only a score by Amy Jeckovich with 3 minutes left.

 

Boys' Soccer

Dalton Andrusko tapped in a rebound with 11 minutes left in overtime, lifting Council Rock North past Emmaus, 3-2, in a state Class AAA first-round tournament game at Whitehall.

Andrusko's second goal of the game was set up when Alec Greenhall took a corner kick that Alec Neumann headed off the crossbar, but the rebound went to Andrusko.

Central Bucks East got five saves from goalie Jacob Nesteruk in a 3-0 shutout of District 2 champ Abington Heights at Scranton. Sean Jenkins scored all three goals, assisted by Ben Marks and Eric Vare, and also converting a penalty kick.

State Class AA. Holy Ghost Prep sailed past Conwell-Egan, 5-0, in the first round at Council Rock North. Kyle Klein scored the first two goals 4 minutes apart, Colin O'Neill had a goal and two assists, and goalies Jim Gavaghan and Pat Herbert shared the shutout.

Pa. Independent Schools. Hill School sophomore Colten Habecker scored off Ben Wong's assist with 29 minutes left for the goal that stunned host Malvern Prep, 3-2, in the tournament semifinals.
