McQueary won't attend Saturday game

STATE COLLEGE - Embattled wide receivers coach Mike McQueary will "not be in attendance" at Saturday's game against Nebraska, the school announced.

In a statement, Penn State said, "Due to multiple threats made against Assistant Coach Mike McQueary, the University has decided it would be in the best interest of all for Assistant Coach McQueary not to be in attendance at Saturday's Nebraska game."

McQueary, who witnessed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in the shower at the team's football building back in 2002 when he was a graduate assistant, has become the latest figure of controversy surrounding the football program after the university was rocked by a child sex abuse scandal last weekend. Since Sandusky and two university officials were indicted by the state's Attorney General's office last Saturday, the Board fired football coach Joe Paterno and accepted the resignation of president Graham Spanier.

No discussions have taken place about dismissing McQueary, interim coach Tom Bradley said at his press conference. A university spokesman, who said he was not familiar with the Board's discussions, could not speculate on the future of McQueary.

Bradley said McQueary's status will be determined by interim athletic director Mark Sherburne, although the Board of Trustees could intervene.

The Board will hold an open meeting at 9:45 Friday morning at the Nittany Lion Inn.

If McQueary, who communicates the offensive playcalls from co-offensive coordinators Galen Hall and Jay Paterno to the huddle, is upstairs, grad assistant Terrell Golden will be on the sidelines. Jay Paterno, Joe's son and the team's quarterbacks coach, will also coach Saturday with "a heavy heart and love for his father," Bradley said.

McQueary was at practice inside Holuba Hall on Thursday. When asked about McQueary's status for Saturday outside Holuba Hall, associate athletic director for football administration Fran Ganter would not comment.
