Demand high for Penn State-Nebraska tickets

AMID THE chaos that is Penn State right now, tickets for Saturday's home finale against Nebraska were in high demand yesterday on the secondary market. Joe Paterno announced his retirement earlier in the day, sparking a ticket buzz, but late last night the Penn State Board of Trustees announced his firing.

According to StubHub spokeswoman Joellen Ferrer, ticket prices spiked by as much as 50 percent and were selling at a high volume, despite the ongoing alleged child-molestation scandal that has rocked the university and its football progam.

"We see price increases for a variety of reasons, but rarely do we find such a high increase in both the price and searches for a regular-season college football game," Ferrer said. "We do expect these trends to return to normal later in the week, but [Paterno's] announcement has definitely created a frenzy."

As of late yesterday, 621 tickets remained. The lowest price found was $149 for an upper-level end-zone spot, while the highest was $1,000 for a lower level seat in the corner. However, the cheapest section on average was the lower corners at around $194 apiece.

The Nittany Lions bring an 8-1 overall record and a 5-0 Big Ten unbeaten streak into this one, but this online frenzy unquestionably was caused by supporters hoping to catch a glimpse of Paterno - embroiled in the case surrounding former assistant Jerry Sandusky - coach his final home game, before the university trustees decided not to allow him finish out the season in a post he held for 46 seasons.
