Devils top Caps, 3-2, in shootout

David Clarkson scored in the fourth round of the shootout, after Johan Hedberg made a pad save on Nicklas Backstrom, as the New Jersey Devils rallied for a 3-2 victory over the host Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Clarkson skated in on Michael Neuvirth, faked to the righ,t and then lifted a backhander over the sliding goalie.

Elsewhere: Eric Staal scored for the first time in a month and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-3, in Raleigh, N.C. . . . Tyler Seguin scored twice and had an assist as the Boston Bruins increased their win streak to five with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Buffalo Sabres. . . . Rookie Ryan Johansen had his first two-goal effort and Steve Mason made 35 saves to help the host Columbus Blue Jackets end a three-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Max Pacioretty scored with 2 minutes, 19 seconds left in overtime to lift the visiting Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators. . . . Craig Anderson made 31 saves, Nick Foligno scored two goals, and the host Ottawa Senators snapped their five-game winless streak with a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. . . . Johan Franzen, Darren Helm, and Brad Stuart scored as the Detroit Red Wings went on to a 5-2 win over the visiting Dallas Stars.
