Holy Spirit's Pollock and Jones on verge of New Jersey football history

Four thousand rushing yards is such a significant milestone that before this season just two sets of running backs from the same South Jersey school had managed that mark.

Now two classmates are on the brink.

Holy Spirit seniors Donta Pollock and Nigel Jones are about to become the first New Jersey players from the same team in the same class to pass 4,000 career rushing yards in the same season, according to South Jersey sports historian Chuck Langerman.

"I know it's something we'll look back on after the season," Jones said Wednesday night. "It's something we'll always talk about."

Story continues below.

Pollock already has reached the mark. The 5-foot-9, 200-pound back has 4,317 yards entering Friday night's game against Montclair Kimberley in the semifinals of the Non-Public 2 state tournament.

Pollock has drawn interest from Division I programs such as Boston College but could spend a year at a prep school or junior college.

"It's good to have two running backs," Pollock said Wednesday night. "This way a team can't just key on one guy."

The 5-9, 190-pound Jones has 3,936 yards. Also a top defensive back, Jones has offers from Temple, Miami of Ohio and Western Michigan.

Before this season, just two sets of South Jersey athletes from the same school had rushed for more than 4,000 career yards.

Paulsboro's Isaac Redman ran for 5,255 yards in a career that ended in 2002, and the Red Raiders' Kevin Harvey ran for 4,028 yards in a career that ended in 1995.

Salem's Derek White ran for 4,313 yards in a career that ended in 1988, and the Rams' A.B. Brown ran for 4,017 in a career that ended in 1983.

Holy Spirit is 5-3, although one of those losses was a forfeit for using an ineligible player. The Spartans could have three games to play - Friday's playoff opener, the annual Thanksgiving clash with rival Atlantic City, and a possible showdown with undefeated Camden Catholic in the Non-Public 2 title game, which is expected to be held Dec. 2 at The College of New Jersey.

"That's what it's all about," Pollock said. "We want to finish strong and show people we're the team we thought we could be."
