VJM suffers tough loss in state final

HERSHEY - For the 100th time this season, Villa Joseph Marie scored a goal Friday night. But for the first time all year, that meant something conspicuously negative.

The Jems' undefeated season came to a devastating halt with a 1-0 loss to Mars on an own goal in the PIAA Class AA state girls' soccer final at Hersheypark Stadium.

Villa Joe junior defender Melanie Crucitt deposited the ball in her team's own net in the 28th minute of the game when trying to clear a weak shot attempt by attacking Mars midfielder Crysta Ganter.

Story continues below.

"We knew it might be a one-goal game," Jems coach Rich Finneyfrock said. "It's a shame we scored on ourselves, though."

The Jems, who certainly did not play their best soccer Friday, still had a bevy of scoring opportunities, including 10 shots on goal and eight corner-kick chances.

But the Mars defense was clutch in defending the box and thwarting Villa Joe's chances. The Fightin' Planets were more active in winning neutral balls, and exhibited speed and athleticism that made it tough on the Jems.

Mars keeper Sarah Dailey was impressive in posting 10 saves. Villa Joe's Sarah Dailey had six.

"We were far more dangerous than they were as far as goal opportunities," Finneyfrock said. "The problem is soccer doesn't always pan out that way. Basketball, you get 50 chances to get your layup in."

It was the first loss of the year for Villa Joseph Marie (23-1), which was seeking the 11th state championship in program history. It was the Jems' first championship-game appearance since they were co-champs in 2007. They won back-to-back titles in 2004-05, were runners-up in '03, and were champions in '02.

Mars did what Villa Joe could not: complete its undefeated season, finishing 25-0-1 and winning its first state championship in its first finals appearance.

"A goal is a goal, and that was our main objective," Mars' Ganter said. "I almost feel bad for it to end like that for them, but I'll take the win any way we can."

Crucitt declined comment after the loss. Senior tri-captain Emily Market fought off tears when reflecting on the otherwise superb season.

"I'm just so proud of everyone. They did an awesome job," Market said. "I mean, sure, I wanted to win this game, but it doesn't always work in your favor. I'm really proud of them."

Mars has not lost since the 2010 state semifinals, improving to 49-1-1 in the past two seasons. The Planets outscored opponents by 192-8 this year.

Villa Joe will return 16 players next season, including Crucitt, to a dominant yet young team that posted 99 goals (to just seven allowed) and 17 shutouts this year.

"We had a great year. We were unlucky. . . . It's an own goal. It's a [tough] way to lose, but stuff happens," Finneyfrock said.
