Sabres backup Enroth shuts down Hurricanes

Posted: November 19, 2011

Jhonas Enroth recorded his first shutout of the season by making 34 stops to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 1-0 win over the reeling Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday.

Jason Pominville had the game's lone goal.

Enroth is filling in for Ryan Miller as the Sabres' top goaltender recovers from a concussion suffered Nov. 12 against Boston. It was the second career shutout for the Sabres' second-round draft pick in 2006.

Carolina has lost seven of its last eight games, prompting speculation about the job security of coach Paul Maurice.

Back-up goalie Brian Boucher made 19 saves for the Hurricanes while starting in place of Cam Ward. The former Flyer has yet to post a win this season.

Elsewhere: Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 24 saves for his first save in two seasons as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas Stars, 3-0, in Denver. Paul Stastny and Chuck Kobasew had a goal each and Matt Duchene scored an empty-net goal with 4.5 seconds left to seal the win and snap the Avs' three-game skid.. . . . Curtis Glencross scored twice as the host Calgary Flames thumped the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2.

Wild send Lundin down

The Minnesota Wild have sent defenseman Mike Lundin on a conditioning assignment to their AHL Houston affiliate.

The 27-year-old Lundin hasn't played yet this season because of a back problem. He was placed on injured reserve Sept. 30.

Quotable

San Jose captain Joe Thornton on Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who had a goal and three assists in the Sharks' 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday: "Maybe he's our secret weapon."
