John T. Goslin Jr. | Antiques dealer, 91

November 23, 2011

John T. Goslin Jr., 91, of Berwyn, an antiques dealer and craftsman, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Ephrata Community Hospital of heart failure.

Mr. Goslin was a manager for Lee Tire Corp. in Conshohocken and a systems analyst for the School District of Philadelphia, before retiring in his late 40s to pursue his passion for antiques, said his son, John III.

On Sundays for 30 years, Mr. Goslin presided over a large corner booth at Renningers Antiques & Farmers Market in Kutztown and traveled frequently on buying trips to Europe.

Story continues below.

A creative artisan, he repaired china and metal items, made heart-shaped brass inlays for old kitchen utensils, built stone walls, and painted and sketched, his son said.

Every Thursday for 25 years, Mr. Goslin could be found at his workbench in a friend's blacksmith shop, his son said.

Mr. Goslin graduated from Lansdowne High School.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a bombardier in the European Theater.

After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from Temple University.

In 1947, Mr. Goslin married Jane Reed. Early in their marriage, the couple paid $25 a month to rent a dilapidated, 200-year-old stone house on an estate in Devon. He repaired the rotting stairs and floors and installed electricity. A coal stove was used for heat and cooking.

Mr. Goslin and his wife moved to Berwyn in 1957, where they renovated another 18th-century home.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by a brother, Karl.

No services are scheduled.
